Magnetization and dissipation measurements in the quantum Hall regime using an integrated micromechanical magnetometer

چکیده
We present low-temperature ~365 mK! magnetization measurements of 403100 mm mesas of two dimensional electron gases ~2DEGs! integrated into micromechanical cantilever magnetometers. Over a wide range of applied magnetic field, the cantilever resonance frequency reveals the thermodynamic magnetization of the 2DEG. Upon illumination of the sample, we observe the appearance of both cyclotron and Zeeman gaps in the density of states. We attribute this to the narrowing of the disorder-broadened Landau levels as the carrier concentration is increased. Additionally, we observe strong peaks in the dissipation of the system at small integer filling factors which we associate with eddy currents excited by the cantilever motion. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-8979~00!36908-0#

Classical and quantum magnetisation reversal studied in single nanometer-sized particles and clusters using micro-SQUIDs
Recent progress in experiment on quantum tunnelling of the magnetic moment in mesoscopic systems will be reviewed. The emphasis will be made on measurements of individual nanoparticles. These nanomagnets allow one to test the border between classical and quantum behaviour. Using the micro-SQUID magnetometer, waiting time, switching "eld and telegraph noise measurements show unambiguously that t...
متن کاملEvaluation of a long-time temperature drift in a commercial Quantum Design MPMS SQUID magnetometer using Gd2O3 as a standard
The long-time temperature drift in a commercial Quantum Design MPMS SQUID magnetometer was evaluated using time-dependent magnetization measurements of Gd2O3. In contrast to earlier claims, the amplitude of the drift was found not to exceed 1-1.5 K. 30 minutes after system stabilization the temperature deviation did not exceed 0.2 K and the temperature was fully stabilized in less than 3 hours.

Damping is a critical design parameter for miniaturized mechanical resonators used in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), optomechanical systems, and atomic force microscopy for a large and diverse set of applications ranging from sensing, timing, and signal processing to precision measurements for fundamental studies of materials science and quantum mec...
متن کاملLow-temperature magnetic hysteresis in Mn12 acetate single crystals
– Precise magnetic-hysteresis measurements of small single crystals of Mn12 acetate of spin 10 have been conducted down to 0.4 K using a high-sensitivity Hall magnetometer. At higher temperature (> 1.6 K) step-like changes in magnetization are observed at regularly spaced magnetic-field intervals, as previously reported. However, on lowering the temperature the steps in magnetization shift to h...
متن کاملExperimental investigation of the fluctuation dissipation relation in a spin glass
We present the first experimental determination of the time auto-correlation of magnetization in the nonstationary regime of a spin glass, and its quantitative comparison with the corresponding response, the magnetic relaxation function. These measurements were performed in a new experimental setup working as an absolute thermometer. Clearly, we observe a non-linear fluctuation-dissipation rela...
